Hands-on sessions: microphones, sensors, circuits and collective composition.
Selected through an open call for Dâmbovița Delivery (3–4 October, Regie), about:sound was an open-air table where passers-by got hands-on with contact and electromagnetic microphones — listening to the hidden vibrations of objects and the electromagnetic hum of everyday devices, learning how the technology works and trying out basic ways to shape and manipulate the sounds they captured.
Part of the about:sound series — a two-part workshop for Libra Bank employees within the bank's cultural programme. In the first sessions participants built their own contact and electromagnetic microphones, gathered sounds from around the bank, and composed an audio piece using only what they had recorded. In the second part they used p5.js and AI to develop a generative art algorithm that turned their composition into sound-reactive plots, which were then drawn on paper with a pen plotter.
Participants learned how to build a glove-like wearable interface that uses sensors to modify sound in real time, translating gesture and motion directly into audio transformation.
Children from Târgu Lăpuș, Maramureș learned how to build two types of microphones, EMF and contact microphones. By collecting hidden and overlooked sounds from their surroundings, participants later composed a collective audio piece, transforming the subStejar location into a collaborative audio piece.
Participants built DIY microphones together with preamps and explored recording techniques, later composing textures and rhythms in Ableton Live.
A hands-on workshop where participants soldered and assembled electromagnetic microphones, then used them to capture electromagnetic rhythms in the gallery space. It later evolved into a series across Romania, where participants from different cities learned how to build microphones and explore local soundscapes.
We explored the urban environment with microphones, creating a sonic map of the city and later transformed the sounds into a collaborative composition.
