Aural Topographies Main

Aural Topographies is an interactive installation that complements the Texture Recording Tool (TRT) and attempts to create a cross-modal experience by adding a physical dimension to the field recording domain.

The audio recording process amplifies sound’s vibrations — taking off the invisible cloak that hides the compressions and decompressions of the medium, revealing the environment around us. The primary question that the TRT explores is how traditional field recordings can be expanded to include a new, “physical” sonic dimension.

When listening to our surroundings, we form an image of the aural space but rarely consider how a tree bark, an old wall, or even the ground might sound. By using the principles of piezoelectricity, this project adds a tactile dimension to sound recording — amplifying textures themselves to create a form of “contact field recording.”
